DD, I see your F-18 Hornets and raise you F-22 Raptors. (Can't help myself, I was in the Air Force for 10 years and was stationed at Langley AFB, Virginia, the first base to get F-22's) I worked on the weapon systems for these aircraft, mainly AIM-120 missiles. The United States claim them to be the most advanced fighters in the world. When I would talk to pilots out on the flightline the F-15 pilots said the F-22 pilots could easily shoot down 3 F-15's at a time due to their advanced targetting and stealth. I imagine the base has converted completely to F-22's by now, but when I separated from the Air Force Langley had 1 squadron of F-22's and 2 squadrons of F-15's.
Anyhow, another major ability this aircraft has is Supercruise, it can travel at mach speeds (greater then the speed of sound) without afterburners. All other fighter aircraft require afterburners to reach this kind of speed. Picture 3 you can see that all weapons and missiles are stored internally in order to maintain the aircraft's stealth profile.

i worked on the F-22 as well.. i did the R/D for the electronics involved with the weapon navigation.
i also know all about the AAMRAM missles :) waiting to see if the navy gets its version of the F-35.. then once again the air force will be 2nd! haha just a fun fact.. the navy has more Pilots and Aircraft then the other branches of the service combined :P

Yeah I worked on those missiles for 6 years in Hampton Roads where I was stationed. It was actually a fun missile to work on, hooking up the test equipment and making sure the navigation works properly. I was just happy when we stopped using AIM-7's, those things were a nightmare to maintain. Also, the Raytheon people that sell the government these missiles are some pretty cool people and definitely an organization I am hoping to find work with :)

If anyone was dumb enough to let me in the cockpit of any of those planes I'd probably die doing something stupid at super sonic speeds ... but I'd have a huge smile plastered to my face ... until it becomes part of the ground.
